How to hire your first developer
Published on September 15, 2026 · By NodeX Team
Hiring your first developer is one of the most important decisions an early-stage startup will make. It's not just about finding someone who can code — it's about finding someone who can make reasonable technical decisions without constant supervision.
Define the problem before the profile
Before writing a job post, write down what problem you need solved in the next six months. A "senior full-stack" profile means nothing if you don't know whether you need someone building from scratch or maintaining something that already exists.
Signals that matter more than the resume
- How they explain past technical decisions, not just which technologies they used.
- Whether they ask questions about the product, not only about the stack.
- How they react to code they didn't write themselves.
A technical interview isn't an exam
The goal isn't for them to memorize algorithms, but to see how they think through an ambiguous problem — which is exactly what they'll face day to day.
Hiring fast and hiring wrong costs far more than taking two extra weeks to find the right person.
If you already know the profile you need, post your job on NodeX Talent and let the process come to you.
